Q&A FROM THE WEBINAR
Q:“I can’t add additional effects in Color Efex 5. How do I do that now?” A: In the previous versions of Color Efex, you had a button below the right panel that said “Add Filter”. That button is now gone! Instead, when you hover over a new filter in the left column, you’ll see a “+” sign. Click the plus sign to add the additional filter.
Q: “Where are the notes in the purchased file?” A: There are TWO downloads with the purchase of the notes. One folder has all of the images from the projects, the other folder has the notes and bonus textures (I have to limit the file sizes for the online store).
Q: “Can you adjust the opacity in Silver Efex?” A: No, it applies the effect at full strength. However, once back in Photoshop (since Nik makes its own layer), you could lower the layer opacity if desired.
Notes: Apparently I’m late to the party in knowing this trick! When you want to copy a control point, I’ve always used the little “copy” button on the row with the control point. An easier way is to hold the ALT/Option key and click on the first Control Point, then just drag the new one to the new spot!

We’re back from a great weekend in New England at the NECCC 75th Conference! It’s sad that this will be the last in-person event of this kind, but understandable too. It takes a TON of work and volunteers to put together such a huge event. It was great to see old friends and even meet some of my followers in person! We also took time to visit friends in CT before heading South again. Had to stop and get “real” bagels, hard rolls, Portuguese rolls and Hummel’s hot dogs for us and some other transplanted friends! Freezer is full of goodies!

I haven’t done a tutorial of my own in a while, so here you go! For this project I used Topaz Studio 2 & Nik Color Efex.
This image was from the last Spring Barns & Back Roads Workshop. My friend, Carol Mossa, was the only attendee, so I was able to photograph more than I normally would on a workshop (Carol insisted!). This is the side of an old gas station – it’s a “messy” scene, but something about it, I like!
I started with basic adjustments in Lightroom, then took it into Photoshop and Topaz Studio 2 where I ran the AI Clear filter and Precision Detail.
Next, I tried to figure out how to make it look vintage or old without using textures. I poked around in Nik Color Efex to see what filters might work and I used several.
First I applied Colorize (#6 at strength of 8%). Then Graduated Neutral Density and finally Graduated Fog (#2 at opacity of 47% with a blend of 34%, vertical shift of 86% and Highlights of 18%). This is the result:
I love the way the fog softens the image and adds some drama. It may not be vintage, but I like it!

CREATING YOUR OWN TEXTURES COURSE
If you haven’t joined the party, jump on in!! The course is self-paced, and you may download the videos as well as all of the PDF instructions to use at any time.
You will learn how to create your own textures and then modify them for even more textures! Use Photoshop filters, brushes, Procreate on iPad, and your smartphone to create/photograph textures, and then modify or change those textures with plug-in software, brushes, phone apps, and by blending multiple textures, using gradient maps, changing color palettes, and much more. Module 9 will contain LOTS of techniques to create textures by hand at home with free or inexpensive supplies – mostly things you’ll find around the house!
Modules 1-6 are released and people are creating some awesome new textures! Modules 7, 8 & 9 are planned to be released before the end of June. We already have Module 10 for Resources. AND…also included with the course are several group chats – we’ve had one so far and there will be a couple more as modules are rolled out. The first one was recorded and has been added to the Resource module for those who could not attend “live”. We also have a private Facebook group just for course participants to share creations and ideas and ask questions.
The first six modules contain almost six hours of video tutorials PLUS the written PDF instructions, AND over 100 texture images!

Histogram The histogram is a tool that can be a great help while correcting colors or adjusting exposure, and we’re happy to announce that the Histogram is now available for all your images. A histogram is a graphical representation of the tonal values of your image. In other words, it shows the number of tones of a particular brightness found in your photograph, ranging from black (0% brightness) to white (100% brightness). It’s a great tool that will help you produce well-balanced images.
Now you can press the J hotkey to toggle clipping indicators on and off and see clipped pixels.

BARNS & BACK ROADS WORKSHOPS
I have TWO spots open for May 18-21 Come join us in Northeast TN and photograph old barns, houses, stores, landscapes and more!
We begin the first day with a complimentary welcome dinner to get to know each other and plan the next three days! I plan on having you photograph two full days and on the 3rd day photograph for a bit in the morning, then we’ll work on images. Bring your laptop if you have one, or you can watch me demo on mine. Car pooling is mandatory on this workshop (you’ll ride with me) as many areas have little parking. We’ve gotten to know many property owners and we’ll be able to access those properties up close.
Optional add-on: We have two guest rooms (one with a queen bed and one with 2 twin beds) so you can stay with us. There are two hotels within five miles of the house as well.
