Today I’ll do some Q&A from Tuesday’s “Creative Compositing” Webinar.

Q: Do your images originate as RAW files or JPG’s?
A: I do shoot in RAW, so that’s what I started with. Each component has typically been edited. I make JPGs for the webinars as they load quicker (even if it’s an unprocessed file).

Q: Do you ever use Smart Objects?
A: I do on occasion – I know I should use them more often! I just got in the habit of using layers for all my adjustments, so that’s how I typically work.

Q: How did you make the selection of the tree to remove all the busy background?
A: I did it in several steps using mostly the Magic Wand and targeting different areas. It worked fine for this image. However, as with most things in Photoshop, there are many ways to do everything! One viewer asked about using Channels to make the selection. I have seen it done and used the process myself once or twice. Here are a couple of videos that get into that process.
