Today’s Tutorial Thursday is a Q&A from Monday’s webinar. THANK YOU to everyone who joined me live on Monday! We had folks from around the world including Belize, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, Sweden, Israel, and, of course, across the US from coast-to-coast — THANK YOU for your support! I also appreciate all of the kind comments on my teaching – much appreciated.
Q: Is there another way to download the Holiday Free Texture set other than Dropbox?
A: Unfortunately, no. I use Dropbox for the Sunday Sampler and files like the free textures as the files are HUGE and it’s the only way to make them accessible to my readers. You do not need a Dropbox account to access the files. When you click my link, it will take you to where the files are located. In the upper right of the screen there are two options: (1) Direct Download; (2) Download to Dropbox. Just click on Direct Download and the files will go into your “Downloads” folder on your computer. They will come over as a Zipped file in most cases – you will need to unzip the file and you can save it wherever you choose on your computer or external drive.
You also do not need Winzip to unzip the files. In Windows follow the steps below:

Q: A tip I mentioned in the webinar that bears repeating!
A: When you are adding type to a project and want to change fonts: (1) Choose your font, size, etc. and add the first word(s). (2) Before changing fonts, hold the SHIFT Key and click where you want to put the next word(s). THEN change font, size, etc. If you don’t do this step and just change the font or size, it will change the first word you typed! I was frustrated with this for a long time until Pat Rech, one of my friends/workshop attendees from AZ told me this tip! It’s SUCH a huge help!!
Q: How did you duplicate a mask?
A: When creating a mask for a layer that you wish to duplicate on another layer, you don’t need to manually recreate it. Just hold the ALT Key (Option on Mac) + Click on the mask you wish to copy and drag it to the new layer – Voila! Copied mask!
Q: I had several questions on LuminarAI. I’ll answer a few below.
(1) Where do I get my download of Luminar that I pre-ordered? Just log in to your Skylum account and go to My Account > My Software. Click the Download Button to the right.
(2) Is there a manual for LuminarAI? YES!! The direct link is http://manual.skylum.com. It is 229 pages long with links to LOTS of video tutorials throughout. Very thorough!
(3) I was on a Q&A webinar with Luminar on Monday and learned this great tip. LuminarAI does not have layers. It is not trying to be another Photoshop, it’s goal is to make your editing faster and easier. That being said, you all know I like layers! SO…If you open your image into Photoshop and make it a Smart Object, you can then edit in Luminar and have the ability to go BACK to Luminar and continue editing (it will remember previous edits and settings). I haven’t tried this yet, but I definitely will be soon and let you know how it goes!
(4) Also learned on Monday. LuminarAI is a pretty robust and complete program, but they still have more awesome features in the works. Here are a few coming in the 1st Quarter of 2021: (1) When you look at your list of skies, there will be thumbnails so you can SEE what each sky looks like before applying; (2) There will be a feature for sky reflections (this looks awesome and I can’t wait for the release!); (3) Bokeh AI is coming!!
I am very impressed with the folks at Skylum and how they have handled this new release. As an affiliate for several companies, typically you get very little advance info. Skylum has given us a TON of info so we know what is coming and what they are doing. There have been several webinars for affiliates, they always answer questions…I’m truly impressed. In today’s Tutorial Thursday I’m going to edit a fall tree with some pretty leaves in Luminar AI.
Here is my original RAW photo:
Once in Photoshop, I duplicated the background layer, then Filter > Skylum > Luminar AI. The new technology in Luminar AI will analyze your image to figure out the subject, then suggest a category of Templates (like looks) for that image. You can select that category – or any other – and choose a template as a starting point. For this image I selected the Scenery Collection that was suggested and the template Clear Skies.
Once you select a template, you can decide to use it “as is”, or go to the Edit tab at the top to do the rest of your processing. In Luminar AI there are 4 editing categories indicated by icons on the right hand edge of the right panel – they are Essentials, Creative, Portrait and Pro.
Essentials is where you will find all of the basic editing functions. I used: Landscape > Golden Hour = 35 Details > Small = 27; Medium = 28 Color > Vibrance = 15 Enhance AI > Accent = 40
Then under the Creative Tab: Sun Rays > you can place the sun where you wish it to be – I chose the upper right behind the tree branch. Amount = 45 Sunrays Length = 65 Penetration = 40 Number of Sunrays = 58 Warmth > Sunrays Warmth = 56
Glow > Orton Effect Soft > Amount = 12
Mystical > Amount = 8
Then over to the Pro Tab for the amazing Supercontrast! Highlights = 16; Midtones = 23; Shadows = 24
And done! The image went from dull to Wow!
