Sunday Sampler Feb. 23

Happy Sunday! Heading in to the last week of February already! I can almost smell Spring!!

This week’s Sunday Sampler is some old peeling wood off a train car. I created several versions from light to heavy grunge. Enjoy!

This week’s featured speaker is

Sunday Sampler Feb. 16

Happy Sunday – time for the Daytona 500! Hope you all had a nice Valentine’s Day with your special someone. Dave brought me pink roses and chocolate covered strawberries! He knows me well (especially after 35 years!).

Today’s Sunday Sampler started as wallpaper in a hotel! The twig print was quite interesting. I’ve created several versions starting with Black & White, then adding a color overlay, then blurring, then changing the overlay to a sunset sky coloring. These would be great for overlaying on another background or placing behind a flower or other subject. Enjoy!

SPECIAL RELEASE!

On Thursday, I posted that Design Cuts and I have put together a special bundle just for my readers – five new products that I think you’ll love!

I’ve been putting together some samples that show you just a few of the endless ways that you can utilize these products.

In this bridge image, I had done my basic editing in Lightroom and used a Lightroom preset to get the coloring. I first applied Grunge Texture #9 at Soft Light blending mode and 73% opacity, then applied Grunge Texture #11 at Screen blending mode and 66% opacity. I used the PNG versions of these textures (they also come as EPS files for those who work in Illustrator). Finally, I applied the Bonus Overlay from the Delicato Fine Art Texture Pack (rotating it to be horizontal), with a Color Burn blending mode at 60% opacity. Below is the layer stack:

Next I took one of my tulip images. This was photographed against a white lace backdrop in my kitchen.

I began by adding a texture from the Delicato Fine Art Texture set – #11-Ice. Blending Mode = Linear Burn and Opacity = 63%. Next layer from the same set – #01-Melancholy, Blending Mode = Linear Burn and Opacity = 57%. I then added an overlay from the Adorn set (the overlays in this set are PNGs with transparent backgrounds; the Textures are full color). I used #24, the handwritten letter, angled it slightly and sized to my image. I masked it off of the flowers so it was only in the background. Blending Mode = Soft Light, Opacity = 74%. Last, I added the same grunge border overlay as I used on the bridge, this time with a Blending Mode of Color Burn and Opacity of 40%. Below is the layer stack:

The next project I took a single tulip photographed at a botanical garden. I had previously made a selection of just the tulip, giving it a transparent background.

Since I’m starting with a transparent background, I will add the textures beneath the flower layer. I began by adding Delicato Fine Art Textures – #04-Breeze at Normal and 100% (since this is now my background layer).

Next I added Delicato #10-Jungle at Blending Mode = Darken; Opacity = 100%. Then Delicato #15-Mithril at Blending Mode = Multiply; Opacity = 73%.

I topped those off with one of the Soot & Stardust Textures – #2 at Blending Mode = Screen; Opacity 92%. Here is the layer stack:

The last product in this bundle is the Vintage Photo Creator. This gives you a layered PSD file into which you drop your image. You can then turn on and off the various textures, backgrounds, scratches, frames and more. Yes, it comes with instructions! Here’s my two creations:

Red Tail Hawk
Tyja – my friend’s Icelandic horse.

PHOTOSHOP TUTORIALS

Like me, you may have heard of “luminosity masking” but didn’t really know what it was. I had a general idea, but hadn’t seen a tutorial that explained it clearly – until now! This one from Digital Photography School is pretty thorough. “How to Enhance Urban Night Photographs Using Luminosity Masks in Photoshop” is worth checking out!

Tutorial Thursday Dec. 12 + Topaz Holiday Sale!

Sample Word Art Poster

Last week I shared a new Design Cuts Mini Bundle that is exclusive to Meredith Images’ readers! This bundle contains five texture products that I think you will love.

This is another tutorial showing you how you can not only use the products in general, but also how you can manipulate and change textures when you begin to layer them, thus creating new textures or backgrounds for a project such as scrapbooking, word art, etc.

I began with an item from “108 Flow Liquid Textures”, #3. I rotated the image 90° clockwise (Edit > Transform > Rotate 90° Clockwise).

I then opened then opened “Damaged Poster Textures” and selected #12. I chose this texture as I liked the curve of the color in the texture – I thought it was similar to the curve of the Flow texture. However, to get the curves of each to be heading the same direction, I flipped the Poster Texture Vertically (Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical). I then used the “handles” to rotate the texture and further align with the base texture, like this:

I then changed the Blending Mode of the top texture to Color Burn, and lowered the opacity to 75%.

If you don’t like the darker spots flowing through the center, add a Layer Mask and remove them!

I thought that this texture looks like waves on a beach, so I decided to add a “beachy” saying, “Happiness comes in Waves”.

Select the Type Tool. I used the font Fanatic Lite at 150 pt. I selected the color from the dark area of the texture (#2d3a37), then typed the word “Happiness”. (Of course, you can use fonts you have or like.)

In order to add a new type layer and change the font and point size without it changing my first type layer, I find it easiest to add a new blank layer before making changes for my second type layer.

So, add a new blank layer, then change your typeface to Gabriola, 110 pt. same color, and type “comes in”.

Add another new blank layer, change typeface to Allegretto Script, 250 pt., same color, and type “Waves”. Hit Control + T to get the bounding box and handles and rotate this word as shown. I also wanted just the “W” to be bigger, so I highlighted that letter and changed the point size to 300 pt. I also wanted to take out some of the excess space between the ‘W’ and the ‘a’. To do this, put your cursor between the two letters and open the Character Panel (Window > Character). In the box next to the “V/A” symbol I entered -100 and this closed up that excess space nicely.

I like to add Layer Styles to my type layers to give them some depth and dimension. Select the Happiness layer. Double-click just below the word Happiness in the grey area of the layer to open the Layer Styles box.

First, I added a Stroke. Click the box to the left of Stroke, and be sure to click on that line so it is highlighted and you will have the proper control panel. I selected a size of 5 px; position = Outside; Blend Mode = Normal; Opacity 80%; Color = White.

Then check off the Drop Shadow box and highlight that row. I used the following settings:

You can now copy this layer style to the other 2 layers. Right click on the layer where the layer styles now show > Copy Layer Style. Now right click on the other 2 layers and Paste Layer Style.

I added one more layer style to just the “Waves” type. Double-click to reopen the layer styles box. I added a “Bevel & Emboss” effect to this word:

Tutorial "Thursday" Dec. 6 + New Workshops!

The days keep flying by – I missed posting on Thursday! So here is Tutorial Thursday/Friday! Enjoy!

Design Cuts Sample Poster

On Tuesday I shared a new Design Cuts Mini Bundle that is exclusive to Meredith Images’ readers! This bundle contains five texture products that I think you will love.

I put together a sample using a few of the items from this bundle — and it just so happens that this sample also announces my new Spring Workshops (keep reading for those)!

Here is the finished project:

And here is how I created it!

I began with an item from “Vintage Paper Textures Mega Pack”, #51. I then opened one of my barn images and brought it in as a layer on top of the paper. I then added a layer mask to the barn layer, and using a Photoshop brush with the foreground color set to black, I gave the image a torn-paper look. I changed the Blend Mode of the barn layer to Linear Burn and the opacity to 85%.

Next I brought in another texture, this one from the “Damaged Poster Textures” set, #16. I changed the Blending Mode to Darker Color and the opacity to 57%. I dragged this layer down under the barn layer, like this:

Next I added my Type layers. The first is the heading at the top. I used the font “Honest Script” which I had previously purchased from Design Cuts. Size 60 pt., color selected from the sky of the barn image (#58676e). I used the same settings for the larger type under the image. I added a third layer of type with a point size of 30 pt., and color #6b8691.

I wanted to add some layer styles to the type layers, so I clicked in the blank area of the first type layer to open the layer styles box. I did a Stroke of 1 point, color #464e51, and a Drop Shadow at an angle of 135, Distance 29, Spacing 30, Size 16.

To copy the layer styles to the other 2 layers, right click on the layer you just did the layer styles on, select “Copy Layer Style”, then highlight the next layer, right click, and “Paste Layer Style”.

And that’s the finished image! Here is the final layer stack:

Sunday Sampler 12-1

Still settling in to our new Tennessee home! Did some holiday decorating and put up a our small Christmas tree. Still weaving around boxes, but most of the living room, dining room, kitchen and master bedroom are clear (well, almost!).

This week’s Sunday Sampler consists of one of my favorite subjects – RUST! On Friday we went to a “Gas and Oil Memorabilia Show”. It’s held at a cool antique shop we discovered last summer (which, by the way, will be a part of my upcoming barn workshop!). They have some cool old cars out front, all kinds of things around the property, and a huge building filled with “stuff”! This is the truck that these rust images came from:

I did some basic editing in Lightroom, then added a texture preset in Topaz Studio.

I’m sure you’re “done” with all the Black Friday talk, but wanted to send a last reminder of these deals that expiring at midnight tomorrow on Cyber Monday!
