Sunday Sampler Feb. 23

Happy Sunday! Heading in to the last week of February already! I can almost smell Spring!!

This week’s Sunday Sampler is some old peeling wood off a train car. I created several versions from light to heavy grunge. Enjoy!

This week’s featured speaker is
Roni Chastain of Long Island, NY.

Sunday Sampler Feb. 16

Happy Sunday – time for the Daytona 500! Hope you all had a nice Valentine’s Day with your special someone. Dave brought me pink roses and chocolate covered strawberries! He knows me well (especially after 35 years!).

Today’s Sunday Sampler started as wallpaper in a hotel! The twig print was quite interesting. I’ve created several versions starting with Black & White, then adding a color overlay, then blurring, then changing the overlay to a sunset sky coloring. These would be great for overlaying on another background or placing behind a flower or other subject. Enjoy!

SPECIAL RELEASE!

On Thursday, I posted that Design Cuts and I have put together a special bundle just for my readers – five new products that I think you’ll love!

I’ve been putting together some samples that show you just a few of the endless ways that you can utilize these products.

In this bridge image, I had done my basic editing in Lightroom and used a Lightroom preset to get the coloring. I first applied Grunge Texture #9 at Soft Light blending mode and 73% opacity, then applied Grunge Texture #11 at Screen blending mode and 66% opacity. I used the PNG versions of these textures (they also come as EPS files for those who work in Illustrator). Finally, I applied the Bonus Overlay from the Delicato Fine Art Texture Pack (rotating it to be horizontal), with a Color Burn blending mode at 60% opacity. Below is the layer stack:

Next I took one of my tulip images. This was photographed against a white lace backdrop in my kitchen.

I began by adding a texture from the Delicato Fine Art Texture set – #11-Ice. Blending Mode = Linear Burn and Opacity = 63%. Next layer from the same set – #01-Melancholy, Blending Mode = Linear Burn and Opacity = 57%. I then added an overlay from the Adorn set (the overlays in this set are PNGs with transparent backgrounds; the Textures are full color). I used #24, the handwritten letter, angled it slightly and sized to my image. I masked it off of the flowers so it was only in the background. Blending Mode = Soft Light, Opacity = 74%. Last, I added the same grunge border overlay as I used on the bridge, this time with a Blending Mode of Color Burn and Opacity of 40%. Below is the layer stack:

The next project I took a single tulip photographed at a botanical garden. I had previously made a selection of just the tulip, giving it a transparent background.

Since I’m starting with a transparent background, I will add the textures beneath the flower layer. I began by adding Delicato Fine Art Textures – #04-Breeze at Normal and 100% (since this is now my background layer).

Next I added Delicato #10-Jungle at Blending Mode = Darken; Opacity = 100%. Then Delicato #15-Mithril at Blending Mode = Multiply; Opacity = 73%.

I topped those off with one of the Soot & Stardust Textures – #2 at Blending Mode = Screen; Opacity 92%. Here is the layer stack:

The last product in this bundle is the Vintage Photo Creator. This gives you a layered PSD file into which you drop your image. You can then turn on and off the various textures, backgrounds, scratches, frames and more. Yes, it comes with instructions! Here’s my two creations:

Red Tail Hawk
Tyja – my friend’s Icelandic horse.

You can grab this bundle of 5 specially selected products for just $33 (which is 50% off) using THIS LINK! On the site you can see also the products in detail with some other examples of how to use them.

Sunday Sampler Feb. 9

Ah February! While it’s Winter in many areas, it’s time to go back to auto racing in Florida (no we’re not there, however). The NASCAR Daytona 500 is next Sunday – today is qualifying and the Busch Clash. And racing isn’t just for the boys! Last night Hailie Deegan finished second in her first start in the Menard’s ARCA Series! Go Hailie!

You may not know this, but Dave and I used to cover auto racing for several regional newspapers and then websites. Most of the time, Dave wrote the articles and I took the photos. We did this from the 1990’s through 2011 (when I got involved in camera clubs!).

We mainly covered the regional Featherlite Modified Tour (which became the Whelen Modified Tour when the sponsor changed), but we also got to be at quite a few NASCAR Cup races in New Hampshire, Bristol Tennessee, Indianapolis Raceway Park, Pocono and a few others. It was a lot of fun for sure, got to meet lots of great people and took pics of some of the “big” names in racing like Dale Earnhart (both Sr. & Jr.), Jeff Gordon, Richard Petty, the Labonte brothers and many, many more.

Let’s go racing!

This week’s Sunday Sampler is courtesy of my hubby, Dave! We were out scouting barns for our “Barns & Backroads” workshops the other day (more on that below), and he did an in-camera “swipe” of a red barn. After MUCH playing around in Topaz Studio, he came up with some very cool textures! I took one of his creations in green tones, and found several parts of the image that made great textures on their own. I was able to upsize them with Topaz Gigapixel.

So, today’s Sampler consists of the original and three other textures that came from the full image! Remember, you can always change colors with a hue & saturation adjustment, or change them to B&W to get the texture without the color. Enjoy!

And don’t forget to share your creations in our Facebook group: Textures: Turn Ho Hum Into a Work of Art!

Happy Sunday! What a difference a week makes – last Sat. was 75 degrees, now we’re heading into the 30’s this week (average for this time of year is 45 in TN). Though I’m not complaining about a little chill – we’re not shoveling snow anymore!

Sunday Sampler Jan. 12, 2020

Wow – I thought New England weather was fickle – the South is just as crazy! Yesterday was 75° out and gusty. A major line of storms came through in the evening (sadly with tornadoes in some areas), with crazy rain and some lightning. Although there were severe weather alerts in our area, it wasn’t too bad and we made it through just fine. I must say, having weather alerts set up on our phones is a good thing!

This week’s Sunday Sampler contains one of the Cosmos textures from my new releases coming out later this week! I took this texture and ran it through Topaz ReStyle (one of the older modules), and changed the color palette of the texture. Below is an example of how I used one of the versions in my barn image – in “Tutorial Thursday” I will show you how I did this! Enjoy!

Sunday Sampler Jan. 5, 2020 – Revised!

So as soon as I hit “publish” on the earlier blog post, I realized I forgot the links for the “Sunday Sampler”! While I revised it right away, the email of the blog post doesn’t have the live link. CLICK HERE for the updated blog post and link!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season! Hard to believe it’s 2020!! Stay tuned to the blog regularly for all the new happenings at Meredith Images and the Peacock Studio this year!

This week’s Sunday Sampler has some dramatic sky overlays! Yesterday had the BEST skies – stormy and pouring to the East and clearing blue skies and puffy white clouds to the West! I took some shots of the edge of the storm system, and just as I was getting ready to post this blog, Dave noticed the great sun rays coming through the clouds – so I added one of those too!

This kind of texture/overlay is great when you have a really blah gray/white sky. Overlay one of these, mask if needed off of your subject, and voila, an interesting sky for your image. Here’s an example:

A shot of the Baltimore skyline from a water taxi:

While it wasn’t truly an overcast day, the day was hazy and lacked color.

There are two ways to use the overlay:
1) Lay the sky over the image, reduce the opacity so you can see the image below, and use a layer mask to mask the sky off the subject.
2) If you have lots of hard edges in your subject (like in this image), make a selection of your subject then hit Control+J to copy the selection to a new layer. Bring in the sky overlay between the two layers.

Screen shot of my layers.

Finished image – has much more “punch” than the original!
