“WHAT WOULD HAZEL DO?”
One of the new things I want to do on Thursdays is a tutorial/critique of a reader’s image. You can ask me how I might edit and/or change your image (if already edited), or give me an unedited file and see how I would edit and interpret it.
First up is a lovely Winter scene from Sandy G. She asked, “I took the photo of this interesting stump that I saw while walking our dog. An organization that I’m involved with is having a “Winter Challenge” photography project. Since we live in an area that doesn’t get much snow, I had to use a stock photo for the background. The rest of the elements are my photos. Would you add some textures? Is the tree stump proportional with the background the scene?”
Here is the image she sent me:
There are a few things that I think could make this lovely scene even better. First, I cloned out the top angled part of the stump. While it is an interesting shape, I think it over powers the image a bit, especially since it’s the darkest item in the photo. Next I enlarged the cardinal – that pop of red is going to really draw your viewer into the scene and I think it should be more prominent, as well as scaled better for the stump. I then cropped a bit from the right (to the gap in the far trees), and a little from the bottom. I think the moon could also be a little bit higher above the trees (maybe a 1/4″ or so).
I think overlaid a “snow” texture (this was one from the Sunday Sampler a ways back). It’s not really snow, but it does the trick. The texture is white on a black background. Using the Screen Blending Mode makes the black “disappear”. I then lowered the opacity to 50%. I did add a layer mask to remove the snowflakes that were in front of the bird.
This is that result:
I also tried one more texture (Painted Blue 6 from the Watercolor 22 Painted Blues Set). This added a cool blue tone to the image (I probably should have masked the blue off of the bird, however).
Sandy, I hope you like the images!
If you would like to participate, please send me your image and what you’d like me to do with it. If you wish to remain anonymous, that is ok too, just let me know.
